About Make SB Community

The Story behind Make SB Community

Being brought up in Kibagare slum is very challenging considering things like negative influence, drugs and substance abuse, crime, food challenges, financial constraints and schooling. Only a few get the chance to attend high school and higher education.

Gratitude to Skate-Aid in collaboration with Shangilia for introducing skateboarding in the slum back in 2013 and have been skating since then. Skateboarding has been my escape, and considering how you feel when you skate and the sense of accomplishment and resiliency that comes with it. It's sad to mention that 'The Crew' (community kids) that I started skateboarding with back in 2013, most of them ended up in drugs and substance abuse when they stopped skating due to the project pausing in 2018, and many are still struggling with addiction.

The moment we could no longer access the skatepark and skateboards as before, we as community kids, most of us were finding it difficult to continue skating as we did not have our own equipment, and that's where most of us took different paths as Skateboarding kept us busy, occupied and focused.

Make SB desires to advocate for skateboarding and we are working with other skateboarders and volunteers to achieve this. Our mission is to empower kids through the power of skateboarding and help them transform into strong individuals, fostering a strong and resilient community.
