About Make SB Community

The Story behind Make SB Community

Being brought up in Kibagare slum comes with many challenges — from negative influences, drug and substance abuse, crime to financial hardships and limited access to education. Only a few get the opportunity to attend high school and higher education.

In 2013, Skate-Aid in collaboration with Shangilia introduced skateboarding to the community, and we’ve been skating since then. For me, skateboarding became more than just a sport — it was my escape, and a teacher of key life lessons like resilience, mastering failure, and staying focused. When the project paused in 2017, everything shifted. Without access to the skatepark and equipment, many of us found it difficult to continue skating. As a result, we each took different paths. Sadly, many of ‘The Crew’ — the kids I started skating with — drifted into crime and drug use, and some are still battling addiction today.

Skateboarding had kept us occupied, grounded and focused.

That’s why Make SB is committed to advocating for skateboarding in the community. We’re working alongside passionate skateboarders and volunteers to achieve this. Our mission is to empower kids through the power of skateboarding and help them transform into strong individuals, fostering a strong and resilient community.
